Our commitment to ending malnutrition, particularly among children under 5 years of age, is unwavering.
We use a combination of community and facility-based interventions to prevent and treat malnutrition, including the management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) through outpatient therapeutic programs (OTPs) and stabilization centers (SCs).
In order to reach the most vulnerable people in hard-to-reach areas, the consortium employs a number of community strategies meant to. These include use of community health workers (CHW) to provide health service especially Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) to diagnose and provide treatment for the 3 childhood killer diseases of pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhoea. Mothers and caregivers with children 0 – 24 months undergo individual counseling on IYCF to offer practical help to mothers with breast feeding problems. The sessions, conducted at the community and primary health facility levels help caregivers overcome difficulties with breastfeeding and complementary feeding. Key topics during these sessions will include importance of ANC visits and services offered, importance of hospital delivery early initiation of breast-feeding (BF), exclusive BF, timely initiation of complementary feeding and observing hygiene. The consortium implements Family MUAC, whereby caregivers of children under 5 years are trained on screening for malnutrition using MUAC tape and making decisions on referral for treatment. Mother to mother support groups (MTMSG) and similar groups for fathers have been formed and facilitated at the community level to promote the practice of good childcare and feeding practices.
